Travel in comfort as we journey west to the islands and explore the mountains. In the shadows of Mt. Baker, we will stay in Bellingham, known for its bookstores, highly decorated beer scene, and a great variety of outdoor recreation. In Friday Harbor, you’ll appreciate getting a feel for island life with two nights and three full days, with time to wander around the vibrant seaside port. Cruising the San Juan’s provides an opportunity to spot our magnificent marine mammals, including Orca, Humpback, and Minke whales, and of course, scenery. Visit historic La Conner by boat, and cruise through Deception Pass. As we travel the Cascade Mountains, we’ll explore the Bavarian village of Leavenworth and the historic mining town of Roslyn.

Day 1

Walla Walla – Bellingham
This morning, depart Walla Walla and journey over the Cascade Mountains on our way to Bellingham. We will stop in Roslyn’s historic mining town, made famous by the TV show Northern Exposure, and enjoy lunch in the rustic downtown before we travel north through the Skagit Valley in the shadow of the Cascade Mountains. Take in the views of the Salish Sea from the famed Chuckanut Drive on the way to our hotel, the Sheraton Four Points. This evening you have time to explore and dine on your own. A shuttle to many of Bellingham’s unique districts is available, where seafood and craft beers are always on tap.

Day 2

Cruise South San Juan Islands – Friday Harbor

After breakfast at the hotel, we head to the pier to board our motor yacht! Explore the southern end of the San Juan archipelago and be on the lookout for marine mammals and birds while the captain gives a narration about the islands’ history. We’ll seek out points of interest with names like Iceberg Point, Deadman’s Island, and Cattle Pass. After arriving in Friday Harbor, we will head to the Friday Harbor Suites, only blocks away from the harbor and downtown. This is a delightful harbor town, filled with restaurants, shops, galleries and home to the only museum devoted to Orca whales. Overlooking the marina this evening, we’ll experience the best in Pacific Northwest dining at Downriggers Restaurant. After dinner, take advantage of the beautiful evening and window shop your way back to your hotel.

Day 3

Cruise to La Conner – Whale and Wildlife Search – Cracked Crab Lunch

After breakfast at your hotel, take a morning stroll down to the dock for boarding. This morning’s scenic cruising takes us through the narrow passages and islands as we circumnavigate Fidalgo Island en route to the picturesque waterfront town of La Conner. In La Conner, we’ll have time to explore the boardwalk, browse the unique shops, artist studios, galleries, and bookstores. Or stop by a local microbrewery for a cold one!

After La Conner, we travel to the Hole In The Wall, a natural opening in Skagit Bay’s cliffs on our way to Deception Pass. Deception Pass, known for its treacherous tidal flow, stunning scenery, and historic bridge, is one of the most photographed places in Washington State. From there, relish a San Juan Cruises tradition for lunch, Old Fashioned Cracked Crab while we search for Orca Whales, Humpback Whales, Minke Whales, Bald Eagles, Harbor Seals, Harbor Porpoise, sea birds, and other magnificent wildlife. Viewed in their natural environment, these stunning animals are always a treat to behold. Returning to Friday Harbor, enjoy the evening on your own.

Day 4

Island Tour – Cruise to Bellingham

After breakfast at your hotel, board the motor-coach for a San Juan Island guided tour. With comprehensive knowledge of the island, the people, and history of the islands, your driver will take you to several of the most extraordinary spots on the island, such as Lime Kiln state park / Whale Watch Park, the Alpaca Ranch, English Camp – San Juan Island National Historical Park, Roche Harbor Resort and Westcott Bay Sculpture Park.

Back in Friday Harbor, with its variety of unique restaurants, we’ll have time for lunch on our own before our return voyage to Bellingham. In the early afternoon, board a scenic cruise, taking us through channels and past islands not yet explored before arriving in Bellingham in the late afternoon. After transferring to the hotel, relax and prepare for tomorrow and our day in the mountains.

Day 5

Mt Baker – Snoqualmie National Forests

After breakfast, this morning we head to the mountains! The North Cascades and Mt. Baker- Snoqualmie National Forest offers some of North America’s most remote and rugged landscapes. We follow the Nooksack River through steep valleys towards Mt. Baker and Mt. Shuksan. With names like Picture Lake, Artist Point, and Fire and Ice Trail, spend a full day enjoying the vistas, a picnic lunch, and accessible trails.* This evening, we’ll enjoy our last dinner exploring Bellingham’s highly decorated beer scene with a beer and food pairing dinner.

*National Forest may be substituted depending on seasonal snowpack and road accessibility.

Day 6

Bellingham – Leavenworth – Walla Walla

This morning visit Bellingham’s Fairhaven Historic District, with its charming cafes, bookstores, and waterfront trails. From Bellingham, we head up to the Cascades mountains, over Stevens Pass to the charming Bavarian town of Leavenworth. We take time to stroll downtown and enjoy an authentic lunch at a local beer garden. Afterward, we journey through the dramatic Columbia River Basin with a great river providing the background and orchards and vineyards in the foreground. We will return to Walla Walla to say our farewells in the afternoon.
